A practical wedding music guide
Comparing a wedding band and a DJ
Both can work well for a wedding. Think about what you want to hear, then compare the performers, coverage, and practical details in each proposal.
Decide what you want to hear
A live band brings its own voices, instruments, and arrangements to the songs. If you enjoy watching musicians play together, that may help you choose. If you want particular original recordings or mixes, ask a DJ how those tracks would fit the evening.
Compare the actual people and proposal, too. Ask about repertoire, requests, timing, and services. Choosing “band” or “DJ” alone doesn’t answer those questions.
Compare the details side by side
| What to compare | Live band | DJ |
|---|---|---|
| Sound and versions | Listen to the singers and arrangements. Confirm which key songs will be live and which will use recordings. | Discuss recordings, mixes, and clean versions. Confirm the exact tracks you want. |
| Song requests | Check the repertoire and the notice needed for new arrangements. | Ask about advance and guest requests, including any track limits. |
| Breaks and flow | Confirm set lengths, breaks, and music between sets. | Confirm performance hours, transitions, and coverage during any breaks. |
| Space and setup | Review the band area, sound equipment, power, and loading access. | Review equipment space, speakers, power, and loading access. |
| Coverage and budget | Compare musicians, hours, sound staffing, separate setups, travel, and additions. | Compare hours, equipment, separate setups, travel, and additional services. |
Map the whole day before comparing quotes
List the times and spaces that need music, from ceremony through the last part of the night. Ask who makes announcements, what sound equipment is included, and whether moving spaces changes the total. Give each provider the same plan so you’re comparing equivalent coverage.
Our five-hour wedding booking covers cocktail hour and the reception. Ceremony coverage is separate. Recorded cocktail-hour music is included when it uses the main reception setup; another location needs an add-on. The wedding music options explain our lineups and coverage.
Understand recorded music between live sets
We provide recorded music during band breaks and welcome your playlist. We coordinate sets and breaks around toasts and other reception moments. Tell us the songs and timing that matter to you.
Ask about an optional DJ set to finish the night. A separately booked DJ performance is an addition to discuss in your proposal. Recorded break music is included with the band.
Use the evidence that helps you choose
Watch and listen to Soulution, browse the song list, and read couples’ reviews. Ask any provider who will perform, how they handle the music you want, and what their quote includes.
You don’t need to choose every song before getting in touch. Share your date, venue, and coverage priorities, and we’ll prepare a quote you can compare with the other options.
Common questions
Is a wedding band always more expensive than a DJ?
The format alone doesn’t set the total. Compare quotes for the same date, venue, hours, and locations, including equipment, staff, travel, and additions. We quote for your chosen lineup and coverage.
Can we have live music and a DJ set?
Yes. Ask us about an optional DJ finish. We’ll confirm availability, timing, and coverage in your proposal.
What if we want an exact recording for our first dance?
Send the artist, exact version, and any start or end points you need. We’ll discuss playback and its place in the timeline. For a newly learned live arrangement, send the request at least 30 days ahead so we can confirm what works.
Send us your music plans
Tell us your date, venue, and the parts of the day you want covered. We’ll discuss the options and prepare a quote.
